How porting actually works.

From the moment you sign up to the moment your calls hit voip.army — usually 1–3 business days for local numbers.

01

You sign up

Start your free trial. We give you a temporary number to use right away so you're up and running immediately.

02

You send us 2 things

(1) A recent phone bill showing the numbers you want to port. (2) A signed Letter of Authorization — we email you a one-page form, you sign it digitally. Takes 5 minutes.

03

We file the request

We submit the port to your current carrier within the same business day. They have to release the number — by law, they can't hold it hostage.

04

We schedule the switch

Your carrier confirms a port date (usually 1–3 business days later for local, 5–7 for toll-free). You pick a switch window — we recommend early morning or after-hours.

05

The cutover happens

At the scheduled time, calls to your number route to voip.army automatically. Most cutovers take less than 5 minutes. We monitor it live and verify with a test call.

06

You cancel your old service

Once the port is confirmed working, you call your old carrier and cancel. Important: don't cancel before the port completes — that releases the number back to the pool and you can lose it.

What to expect, truthfully.

Most ports go smoothly. A few don't. Here's the honest version of what can go wrong — and how we handle it.

  • Carriers sometimes reject ports. If the name on the LOA doesn't exactly match the account, they'll reject. We catch this upfront 95% of the time, but occasionally it surfaces. We fix it the same day.
  • Toll-free takes longer.Toll-free numbers route through different systems than local. Plan on 5–7 business days, sometimes up to 10. We'll give you a realistic estimate upfront.
  • You won't miss calls during the switch.Your current carrier delivers calls to your number until the moment voip.army takes over. The cutover itself is sub-second.
  • If something does go wrong, we own it.Failed ports are our problem to solve, not yours. We don't charge extra for re-files, escalations, or third-party carrier coordination.

Questions about porting.

The exact details. If you'd rather talk to a human about your specific situation, contact us.

Ask about my numbers
Local US numbers: 1–3 business days from when we submit the port request. Toll-free (800/888/877/etc.): 5–7 business days, occasionally up to 10. We'll give you a specific estimate when you sign up.
No. Your current carrier continues handling calls right up until the moment the port completes — typically a window of less than 5 seconds. We schedule cutovers during your low-call windows (early morning, evening, or weekend) for extra safety.
By FCC rule (47 CFR §52.345), they cannot prevent the port. They can charge their own cancellation/termination fees — that's between you and them. We handle the port mechanics either way.
Yes. Mobile numbers (cellular) can port to VoIP services. Note that once ported, that number is a business line — it won't work for SMS on your personal cell anymore. Most customers want this; some are surprised.
We support fax routing to email (faxes arrive as PDFs in your inbox) and analog fax adapter (ATA) support for legacy fax machines. We'll set this up during onboarding.
(1) A recent phone bill (PDF screenshot is fine) showing the numbers and account details. (2) A signed Letter of Authorization — a one-page form we email you. (3) The exact account name and billing address on file with your current carrier. That's it.
No. If you cancel before the port completes, the number gets released back to the carrier's number pool and may be permanently lost. Wait until we confirm the port is live, then cancel.
Yes. We've handled bulk ports of 50+ numbers in a single window. Multi-line ports usually port together on the same date.
